Biodiversity
Goal.To manage the impact of operational and supply chain activities on ecosystems.
Biodiversity — the variety of life on Earth — underpins healthy ecosystems that provide essential services such as pollination, water purification, climate regulation, and soil fertility. The loss of biodiversity poses a direct risk to businesses, particularly those that rely on natural resources, agriculture, or ecosystem stability. By protecting and restoring biodiversity, businesses can reduce risks, meet regulatory expectations, and contribute to a more sustainable and resilient planet. Increasingly, customers, investors, and governments are looking to businesses to play a leading role in reversing nature loss.
To support biodiversity, businesses should start by understanding their direct and indirect impacts on nature — for example, through land use, sourcing practices, pollution, or habitat disruption. They can take action by protecting green spaces, reducing harmful inputs such as pesticides or pollutants, and avoiding practices that degrade natural ecosystems. Where possible, businesses can enhance biodiversity on-site through native planting, green roofs, or habitat restoration.
In their supply chains, businesses should seek to work with suppliers that follow sustainable land use and production practices. Certifications (such as organic, Rainforest Alliance, or FairWild) can help support biodiversity-friendly sourcing. Companies can also engage with local communities and conservation organisations to support wider ecosystem protection efforts. Measuring and reporting on biodiversity impacts — even in basic terms — can help raise awareness and drive continuous improvement.
